Italian antique silver

Italian antique silver is not modern sterling by default. Much of it follows the 800 standard, and the punches name a city, an assayer or a workshop rather than a single national stamp that solves the object. Rome, Venice, Florence, Naples, Palermo and Messina each have a sequence of marks. A worn punch is normal. The remaining shape, the standard number and the construction of the piece should agree with one another. A spoon bowl that has been reshaped, a seam that does not match the period, or a set of marks that sit in a bright rectangle of fresh metal are reasons to stop. Town guides on this site start from the national picture and then narrow to one city, because a Roman papal assay is not a Venetian mark. These articles are for reading what is left of the punch.
